A cracked or faulty laptop screen is one of the most common repairs we deal with, and it is also one of the easiest parts to order incorrectly. The reason is simple: two screens can be the exact same size and still be completely different.

If you have ever thought "it is a 15.6 inch screen, so any 15.6 inch screen will fit," this article is for you. Getting a screen wrong is frustrating and costs you a return, so here is exactly what to check before you order.


Does screen size decide which panel I need?

Size matters, but it is only the starting point. A 15.6 inch panel will not fit a 14 inch laptop, so you have to get that right first. But two 15.6 inch screens can still differ in the connector, the resolution, the mounting, and the refresh rate.

The most common laptop screen sizes, and the ones easiest to source, are 13.3 inch, 14 inch, 15.6 inch and 16 inch. If your laptop uses one of these, replacements are widely available. Sizes smaller than 13.3 inch are far less common, and panels for them are usually harder to find and sometimes more expensive, simply because fewer laptops use them. It is worth knowing that upfront if you have a smaller or more unusual machine, so the wait or the price is not a surprise.

Order on size alone and there is a good chance it will not fit or will not work. Here is what actually matters beyond size.


What is the difference between a 30-pin and 40-pin laptop screen?

Laptop screens connect to the motherboard with a ribbon cable, and that cable plugs into a connector on the back of the panel. The two most common types are 30-pin and 40-pin, and the number refers to how many pins are in that connector.

A 30-pin screen will not work in a laptop wired for 40-pin, and the other way around. This is the number one reason a screen order goes wrong.

As a general guide, 30-pin has become the more common standard on newer laptops, and 40-pin often appears on gaming laptops and higher refresh rate panels. But do not guess based on that. Check the actual panel.


How do I check whether my screen is 30-pin or 40-pin?

The panel has a long code printed on a sticker on the back, something like "N156HGA-EA3". That code identifies the exact panel, including its pin count.

If you can safely see and photograph that sticker, we can match it exactly. If you cannot get to it, your laptop's exact model and configuration usually lets us work out the right panel. The sticker is the most reliable identifier, so use it if you can.


Why does my 16-inch screen not fit even though it is also 30-pin?

This is one that catches out even experienced buyers, and it is worth its own warning: two panels can both be 30-pin and still not fit each other, because the connector itself comes in different physical widths.

This shows up most on newer 16 inch laptops. Many of them use a narrow 30-pin connector that is physically smaller than the standard 30-pin connector you find on most 15.6 inch panels. The pin count is identical. The plug is not. A standard-width 30-pin cable will not seat properly in a narrow 30-pin panel, and the narrow version will not fit a standard socket.

So on a 16 inch machine especially, "it is a 30-pin panel" is not enough on its own. You have to confirm the connector width as well, standard or narrow.

The safest way to get this right is the panel model number off the sticker on the back. That code identifies the exact panel including its connector type, so we can match not just the pin count but the physical connector. If you are replacing a screen in a 16 inch laptop, treat this as the thing most likely to trip you up, and check it before ordering.


Does the resolution need to match my old screen?

Yes. Screens come in different resolutions, most commonly:

  • HD (1366 x 768): older and budget laptops
  • Full HD or FHD (1920 x 1080): the most common today
  • FHD+ (1920 x 1200): taller 16:10 panels, common on newer business laptops
  • 2K or QHD (2560 x 1440, or 2560 x 1600 in 16:10): sharper panels on mid to high-end laptops
  • 4K or UHD (3840 x 2160): high resolution panels on premium and creator laptops

You need to match your resolution. Putting an HD panel where an FHD one belongs, or the reverse, can cause fit and display problems. The higher resolutions like 2K and 4K also need a cable and hardware that support them, so you cannot simply drop a 4K panel into a laptop that came with FHD. Match what your laptop originally had. Your original panel code tells us the resolution, which is another reason that sticker on the back is so useful.


Does my replacement screen need to be a touchscreen?

Yes, if your laptop originally had one. Touch and non-touch are different panels, and they are not interchangeable.

A touchscreen panel includes the touch layer and connects differently to the laptop. If your machine came with touch, a plain non-touch panel will not give you touch back, and depending on the model it may not fit or work at all. If your machine did not have touch, you cannot add it by fitting a touch panel, because the laptop is not wired for it.

So match touch with touch, and non-touch with non-touch. If you are not sure whether your laptop has a touchscreen, the panel code confirms it, along with everything else.


Can I put a 144Hz screen in a 60Hz laptop?

No. Most laptops run a 60Hz screen. Gaming laptops often run 144Hz or higher for smoother motion, and the two are not interchangeable.

A 144Hz panel is not a drop-in upgrade for a 60Hz laptop, because the laptop's hardware and cable have to support the higher refresh rate. If your laptop came with 60Hz, order a 60Hz replacement. If it came with 144Hz, match that. A screen is a replacement, not an upgrade.


Can I replace an LCD screen with an OLED one?

No, and this is an important one to get right. Laptop screens come in two panel technologies: LCD (the traditional type, including IPS panels) and OLED (the newer type with deeper blacks and richer colour, found on higher-end laptops).

These are not interchangeable. An OLED panel is not a drop-in replacement for an LCD screen, or the other way around. The panels use different connectors, different signalling, and the laptop's hardware is built around the specific panel type it shipped with. Even if the size and resolution look like a match, an OLED will not simply work in a laptop that came with an LCD.

So if your laptop came with an OLED screen, you need an OLED replacement. If it came with an LCD or IPS panel, that is what you replace it with. You cannot use a screen swap to "upgrade" an LCD laptop to OLED, the machine will not support it.

The panel model number on the sticker tells us the panel technology along with everything else, which is one more reason it is the most reliable thing to order from. If you are not sure whether your laptop has OLED or LCD, check your model's original specification or send us the panel code and we will confirm it.


What are brackets and bend connectors on a screen?

Some panels come with brackets on the sides for mounting, and some do not. Some have the connector in a slightly different position. You will see terms like "slim," "no bracket," and "bend connector" in listings.

This is usually sorted out once we know your exact model or panel code. It is worth knowing these variations exist, but the panel code and your model clear them up.


What is the easiest way to order the right screen?

You do not need to become a screen expert. Here is the shortcut:

  1. If your screen is cracked but you can still open the laptop, the panel code is on a sticker on the back of the panel. This is the most reliable identifier.
