Faulty memory is one of the most frustrating faults to diagnose, because it does not look like a memory problem. It looks like Windows being unstable, or a dodgy hard drive, or a virus. People reinstall Windows twice before anyone thinks to test the RAM.
Here is how to spot it, and how to confirm it for free before you spend a cent.
The Warning Signs
Random blue screens. Not the same error every time. Different stop codes, at different moments, with no pattern. Consistent BSODs usually point to a driver. Random, varied ones often point to memory.
Freezes and reboots with no warning. The machine locks solid or restarts on its own, often under load but sometimes while idle.
Programs crashing at random. Different applications, no consistency. One day it is the browser, the next it is Word.
File corruption. Files that were fine become unreadable, or downloads and installs fail with checksum errors. Bad RAM corrupts data on the way through.
It will not POST at all. No display, no boot, sometimes a beep pattern or a diagnostic LED code. This is the clearest sign of all, because the machine is directly telling you it cannot find usable memory.
Read the Codes: Your Machine Is Talking to You
If a laptop or desktop will not start, most brands signal what is wrong before Windows ever loads.
Dell uses an amber and white LED blink pattern on the power button. Two amber followed by three white is a memory fault. Other brands use beep codes or their own LED patterns.
Look up the code for your specific brand and model. It is free diagnostic information sitting right there, and it will often save you hours of guessing.
Step One: Reseat It, Before Anything Else
This is genuinely the fix more often than people expect, and it costs nothing.
Memory sticks work loose over time, especially in laptops that get carried around, and especially after someone has had the machine open for something else. A stick that is a millimetre proud makes poor contact and behaves exactly like faulty RAM.
Power off, unplug, remove the battery if you can, and take the sticks right out. Put them back one at a time, firmly, until the clips click on both sides. Then try to boot.
Do this before you buy anything.
Step Two: Test One Stick at a Time
If you have two sticks, this is how you find out which one is the problem.
Run the machine with only stick one in the first slot. Then only stick two in the first slot. Then swap slots. You are separating three possibilities: a bad stick, a bad slot, or both being fine and the fault being elsewhere.
It takes fifteen minutes and it tells you exactly what to buy.
Step Three: Test It Properly with Software
Windows Memory Diagnostic is built in and free. Press the Windows key, type mdsched, and run it. The machine restarts and tests the memory before Windows loads. It is quick and it catches obvious faults.
MemTest86 is the thorough one. You put it on a USB stick and boot from it. It runs a much more rigorous set of tests, and it will catch intermittent faults that the Windows tool misses. If you suspect memory but the quick test comes back clean, run MemTest86 and let it do several full passes. Errors here are definitive.
One honest note: a memory test that passes does not completely rule out RAM, because some faults only show under specific real-world conditions. But a test that fails is conclusive. If MemTest86 reports errors, replace the stick.
What It Is Not
Before you replace memory, rule out the cheaper and more common causes of instability:
Heat. An overheating machine crashes and reboots too. If it happens under load and the fan is screaming or not spinning at all, look at cooling first.
A failing drive. Corrupted files and freezes can equally be a dying SSD. Our guide on the signs of a failing SSD covers how to check that for free.
Power. On a desktop, an underpowered or failing supply causes random shutdowns that look exactly like a memory fault.
Memory settings. If someone has enabled an XMP or EXPO profile the system cannot run stably, you get crashes with perfectly good RAM. Set it back to default speed and see if the instability stops.
When It Is Actually the Board
Sometimes you reseat, you test both sticks, you try known-good memory, and the machine still will not post. At that point the fault is often the memory controller or the board itself, not the RAM.
