Chargers look interchangeable. They are not. A charger that physically plugs in can still be wrong, and depending on how wrong, the results range from "it charges slowly" to "it damaged the machine."
Three things have to match. Here is how to check each one.
1. Voltage: This Has to Match Exactly
Voltage is not negotiable. Your laptop expects a specific voltage, usually 19V, 19.5V, 20V or similar, and that is what it must receive.
Too low and the machine will not charge or will not run properly. Too high and you risk real damage to the charging circuitry.
Find the voltage printed on your original charger, on the block itself, listed as OUTPUT. It will read something like "19.5V 3.33A". Match that voltage figure exactly.
2. Wattage: You Can Go Up, Not Down
Wattage is voltage multiplied by current. A 19.5V 3.33A charger is a 65W charger.
Here is the useful rule: a higher wattage charger at the correct voltage is safe. A lower wattage one is not adequate.
The laptop draws what it needs. A 90W charger on a machine that needs 65W simply supplies more headroom than required, which is fine. A 45W charger on a machine that needs 90W is a problem. Under load the machine draws more than the charger can supply, so it runs down the battery even while plugged in, charges extremely slowly, or refuses to charge at all.
If you have a gaming or workstation laptop, this matters even more, because those machines can draw heavily under load.
3. The Connector: Size and Shape
This is where most wrong orders happen, because connectors that look the same to the eye are often different by a millimetre or two.
Barrel connectors are measured as outer diameter by inner diameter. Common sizes include 4.5 x 3.0mm, 7.4 x 5.0mm and 5.5 x 2.5mm among others. A 4.5mm tip will slide loosely into a 7.4mm port and make poor contact, or not connect at all.
Some barrel connectors also have a centre pin inside them. Dell and HP use these. The pin is not structural, it carries an identification signal.
USB-C is increasingly common on newer machines. It is easier in that the connector is standard, but wattage and Power Delivery support still matter. A phone charger will physically fit a USB-C laptop and will not meaningfully charge it.
The Thing People Do Not Know About: The ID Pin
Dell and HP chargers include a third signal wire that tells the laptop what wattage the charger is.
If that signal is missing or wrong, which is common with cheap unbranded replacements, the laptop often refuses to charge properly or displays a warning at boot saying it cannot identify the adapter. Some machines will then run at reduced performance and will not charge the battery at all.
This is the single biggest reason a cheap generic charger that "has the right specs" still does not work on a Dell or HP. The specs are right and the signalling is wrong.
The practical advice: on Dell and HP especially, buy a genuine or properly specified replacement. The cheapest option on the market is frequently the one that triggers this.
Signs Your Current Charger Is Failing
It only works at a certain angle. Wiggling the cable makes it charge or stop charging. This is either a broken cable near the connector or a worn DC jack in the laptop. Our guide on DC jack problems covers how to tell which.
It gets unusually hot. Chargers get warm. A charger too hot to hold comfortably is a concern.
Intermittent charging. The charging light flickers on and off, or Windows keeps announcing that power has been connected and disconnected.
The cable is damaged. Fraying near either end, exposed wire, or a section that has gone stiff or discoloured. Replace it. Do not tape it.
It charges very slowly or not under load. Often a sign the charger is failing to deliver its rated output any more.
How to Find Your Specification
Read the old charger. Everything you need is printed on the block. Voltage, current, wattage, and often the part number.
Check the laptop. Many machines have the required input printed near the charging port or on the base label.

Photograph the tip. If you are unsure about connector size, a clear photo of the tip alongside something for scale helps a lot.
Before You Order
Confirm the voltage matches exactly, the wattage is equal or higher, and the connector is the correct size and type. On Dell and HP, take the identification signalling seriously and do not buy the cheapest generic on the shelf.
Getting it right the first time is cheaper than getting it wrong twice.
