A hot laptop is not just uncomfortable. It is slower, it is louder, and over time it shortens the life of everything inside it. The good news is that most overheating has a small number of causes, and several of them are cheap or free to fix.
What Overheating Actually Does
When a processor gets too hot, it protects itself by slowing down. This is called thermal throttling, and it is why an overheating laptop feels sluggish even though nothing is technically broken.
Push it further and the machine shuts itself down without warning to prevent damage. If your laptop cuts out under load with no blue screen and no shutdown sequence, heat is one of the first things to check.
The Usual Causes, Most Common First
Dust. This is the number one cause and it is not close. Air gets pulled in through the vents, and dust comes with it. Over a couple of years it builds into a felt-like mat across the heatsink fins. Air cannot pass through, so heat cannot leave. The fan spins harder and harder and achieves less and less.
Dried thermal paste. The paste between the processor and the heatsink transfers heat across that gap. It dries out over time, typically after three to five years, and once it does the heatsink cannot pull heat away properly. The fan can be spotless and working perfectly and the machine will still cook.
Blocked vents. Laptops usually breathe through the bottom and the sides. Sitting one on a bed, a couch, a duvet or a lap blocks the intake completely. If it only overheats on the couch and never on a desk, you have found your problem.
A failing fan. Bearings wear out. The fan slows, wobbles, makes noise, or stops entirely. Sometimes it still spins but moves far less air than it should.
Genuinely hard work. Gaming, video editing and rendering generate a lot of heat by design. A thin laptop working hard will get hot, and that is normal within limits. This is only a fault if it is throttling or shutting down.
How to Tell If It Is the Fan
Listen. A healthy fan makes a steady rush of air. A failing one grinds, rattles, clicks, or makes a rising and falling whine. Bearing noise is distinctive once you have heard it.
Feel the exhaust. With the machine under load, hold your hand at the exhaust vent. There should be a clear stream of warm air. Weak or no airflow while the fan is audibly spinning usually means blockage rather than fan failure. No airflow and no sound means the fan is not running.
Watch the behaviour. If the machine is hot and the fan never ramps up at all, the fan may be dead or disconnected. If the fan is screaming constantly and the machine is still hot, that points to dust or paste rather than the fan itself.
The Fix Ladder, Cheapest First
1. Use it on a hard surface. Free. Fixes more cases than people expect.
2. Blow out the vents. Compressed air into the exhaust vent with the machine off. This helps, but be honest about its limits. It shifts loose dust and often misses the compacted mat sitting inside the heatsink. Hold the fan still while you do it so you do not spin it up and damage the bearing.
3. Open it and clean properly. Take the bottom cover off, clean the heatsink fins directly, clean the fan blades. This is where the real improvement is. On most business laptops it is straightforward. On some consumer models it is fiddly.
4. Replace the thermal paste. If the machine is more than three or four years old and cleaning did not fix it, the paste is the likely culprit. Old paste comes off, new paste goes on. It is not difficult but it does need care and the right amount.
5. Replace the fan. If the bearing is gone, cleaning will not save it. Fans are model-specific parts, so you need your exact model to order the right one.
When to Do It Yourself and When Not To
Cleaning vents and using the machine on a desk are safe for anyone.
Opening the bottom cover to clean the heatsink is within reach of most people who are careful, provided you work slowly and keep track of screws. Screws in laptops are often different lengths and putting a long one in the wrong hole can damage the board.
Repasting is a step up. It means removing the heatsink, which means dealing with clips or springs, and it means applying paste correctly. Doable, but if you are not confident, this is a reasonable point to hand it over.
If the machine has to come apart significantly to reach the fan, or if you are not sure what you are looking at, get it done properly. A cracked ribbon cable during a cleaning job turns a cheap service into an expensive repair.
Do Not Ignore It
Heat is cumulative. A laptop that runs hot for years wears its components, dries its paste faster, and stresses its battery. Sorting cooling early is one of the cheapest things you can do to extend a machine's life.
